Spring ephemerals

The native spring ephemerals are just starting to bloom! Today (Feb. 14) at Penny's Bend on the Eno River near Durham we saw a couple of flowers each of Eastern Spring-beauty (Claytonia virginica), Dimpled Trout-lily (Erythronium umbilicatum), and Round-lobed Hepatica (Anemone americana). We enjoyed seeing the introduced lawn weed Ivyleaf Speedwell (Veronica hederifolia) in flower, too.
